ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – A 200-foot section of the Glenn Highway, near Glennallen, is flooded, according to John Perreault with the Alaska Department of Transportation’s Northern Region.
“We are going to have DOT staff on hand flagging all night making sure that traffic is safe through there,” Perreault said. “We are seeing a lot more water than we saw last year and our doing our best and we do have gravel resources on hand if any rebuilding is needed when the waters recede.”
An AK 511 incident alert says, “flooding on Glenn Hwy both directions from mile marker 157 to mile marker 187. Flooding up to fog line on highway. Use caution flooding across side roads. Trave[l] with caution.”
The Glenn Highway has not been closed, Perreault said. Drivers are encouraged to obey law enforcement and to not drive across flooded roads. Turn around, don’t drown.
The National Weather Service continues a Flood Advisory for the Glenn Highway along Moose Creek in and around Glennallen until 12:45 p.m. Thursday.
In related news, portions of the Taylor Highway is also flooded near Eagle, Perreault said.
Although smaller roadways are blocked off in the area, the Taylor Highway is not closed, he said.
“Mission Rd. is totally submerged in the area,” Perreault said, and there are flooded ditches.
Reports from Eagle, indicate some flooding in low lying areas and along the road between the town and Eagle village. Large chunks of ice were reported having crossed over the riverbank. Some impacts to structures did occur, although the extent is still unknown.
The National Weather Service discontinued the Flood Warning for Eagle Saturday evening stating, “The ice jam at Eagle broke loose and moved downstream this morning. Water levels are now receding and there is no significant ice coming downriver. Flooding is no longer expected to pose a threat. Please continue to heed remaining road closures.”
