The body of another Tajik citizen killed in Ukraine will be delivered to Tajikistan. Radio “Ozodi” reports about his death . The authorities of Tajikistan do not comment on reports of the death of their citizens in Ukraine.

The father of 39-year-old Maksad Kurbonov from the Rudaki region told Ozodi that he learned about the death of his son near the Ukrainian Bakhmut on the evening of February 4.

Faizullo Kurbonov  also said that his son had been serving his sentence in Russia for the last eight years, in the Arkhangelsk prison, but the publication did not specify under which article.

“They called me and asked where to bury Maksad – in Russia or in Tajikistan. I said that we want to bury him at home. The callers from Russia said that “it’s our duty, we’ll draw up the documents and send the body to Tajikistan,” he said.

Kurbonov’s family was told that he had been killed near Bakhmut in Ukraine. Recently, another Tajik citizen, 27-year-old Zulfikor Mukhiddinov, who was also serving time in a Russian prison, was killed in battles near this city in the Donetsk region. The Tajiks were allegedly recruited in the penitentiary and sent to war as mercenaries, Ozodi said.

Fayzullo Kurbonov also said that he last spoke with his son on the phone in October last year.

“Maksad said that he would be sent to work in Mariupol. I asked: voluntary or forced? He said the prison authorities had compiled a list of more than 100 prisoners to be sent to Mariupol. If I don’t call, don’t worry, Maksad said. That was our last conversation,” said the father.

Until now, there is no exact information about the citizens of Tajikistan who served time in Russia and were killed in the war in Ukraine.

Radio Ozodi writes that they are aware of the death in Ukraine of at least six citizens of Tajikistan who were serving sentences in Russian prisons for various crimes. The Tajik authorities do not comment on reports of deaths of Tajiks in Ukraine.
